Formative assessment is an essential component of effective teaching and learning, particularly in Engineering Science, where students are required to develop strong conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving skills. However, conventional formative assessment practices in polytechnic education are often constrained by time-consuming manual processes, delayed feedback, limited student engagement, and difficulties in monitoring learning progress. To address these challenges, i-FORMES (Interactive Formative Assessment System) was developed as a digital innovation to transform formative assessment into a more interactive, responsive, and student-centred learning experience. The innovation integrates interactive online assessments, automated feedback, real-time performance monitoring, and flexible access through digital devices. i-FORMES was implemented in the Engineering Science course for first-semester polytechnic students, particularly to support learning and assessment of scientific concepts such as Linear Motion. The effectiveness of the innovation was evaluated based on students' perceptions of its accessibility, interface and design, content effectiveness, usefulness, learning experience, and potential to support self-directed learning. The findings indicate that i-FORMES provides a more engaging assessment environment, enables immediate feedback, facilitates continuous learning, and assists lecturers in identifying students' learning needs more efficiently. The innovation also generates useful assessment data that can support evidence-based instructional decisions and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI). Overall, i-FORMES demonstrates strong potential as a scalable digital formative assessment solution that supports Outcome-Based Education (OBE), digital transformation, and student-centred learning in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). It offers a practical and sustainable approach to enhancing the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of Engineering Science education in the digital era.
