PR8: EcoSortX: Design And Fabrication Of An Intelligent Automated Waste Sorting System

The proliferation of municipal waste highlights the critical need for automated, efficient waste management systems to reduce cross-contamination and support sustainable practices. This study presents EcoSortX, a compact, low-cost automated waste sorting system designed to classify and segregate metal, plastic, and paper waste with minimal human intervention. The system integrates an Arduino-based microcontroller with a multi-sensor array and mechanical actuation for real-time segregation. Inductive proximity sensors perform metal detection, while infrared (IR) sensors classify non-metallic materials. Upon detection, a servo-driven mechanical gating mechanism directs sorted items into designated storage compartments. Experimental evaluation of the fabricated prototype demonstrated high sorting accuracy, rapid response times, and reliable operation across diverse testing conditions. By mitigating manual sorting errors and operational overhead, EcoSortX provides a scalable solution for smart city waste management, with future adaptability for IoT-based monitoring and AI-driven image recognition.
