Abstract
The teaching and learning of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Automation requires students to develop both conceptual understanding and practical competency in conventional hardwired control, industrial input/output devices, system construction and troubleshooting. However, the existing training equipment used for this course has been in operation for approximately 25 years and requires a relatively high level of technical understanding to perform installation, fault identification and troubleshooting. This situation creates a learning gap, particularly for students who need to progressively develop confidence and practical competency in connecting and testing real automation systems. To address this challenge, LogicWorks Trainer was developed as an alternative hands-on teaching aid for DEJ40093 – Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) & Automation. The innovation integrates practical hardwired installation with real application-based input and output connections within a single training platform. Students can directly configure and test output devices such as lamps and error indicators, as well as input devices including electrical sockets and Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors. The trainer also provides an appropriate platform for students to perform systematic troubleshooting, enabling them to identify faults and assess their level of understanding through practical application. The key innovation lies in transforming conventional trainer-based learning into a more accessible, application-oriented and troubleshooting-focused learning experience that directly supports the course requirements. By bridging theoretical concepts with real input/output installation and fault-finding activities, LogicWorks Trainer promotes active learning, technical competency, problem-solving and confidence among TVET students. The innovation has potential for wider adoption in polytechnics, universities and technical training institutions as a practical training platform for PLC and industrial automation education.
