A quadrilateral pyramid is a three-dimensional polyhedron consisting of a quadrilateral base and four triangular faces that meet at a single apex. Unlike the well-known square pyramid, such as the pyramids of Egypt, a quadrilateral pyramid allows the base to be any quadrilateral. However, visualizing and analyzing a quadrilateral pyramid from its vertex coordinates can be challenging because only a limited number of interactive tools are available for its construction, visualization, and geometric analysis.
This innovation presents the Quadrilateral Pyramid Simulator, an interactive MATLAB graphical user interface (GUI) developed to construct, visualize, and compute the geometric properties of a quadrilateral pyramid from user-defined coordinates. The GUI accepts the two-dimensional coordinates of four base vertices on the plane (z=0) and the three-dimensional coordinate of the apex. It generates a two-dimensional visualization of the base, a rotatable three-dimensional visualization of the pyramid, and computes key geometric properties, including the base area, total surface area, volume, and orthogonal height.
The GUI integrates coordinate geometry and the shoelace formula into practical applications, allowing users to modify vertex coordinates and instantly visualize the resulting changes in the pyramid and its geometric properties. It accommodates arbitrary quadrilateral bases, making it applicable to a broader range of geometric configurations than conventional square-based pyramids. This innovation extends our previous patented work, Three-Dimensional (3D) Historical Artifacts Geodatabase Inventory System, by introducing an interactive tool for geometric modeling and analysis. It also facilitates geometric modeling, problem-solving, and spatial understanding across various applications, with commercialization potential for educational institutions and tourism companies, particularly in promoting Piramid Gua Kelam, Perlis. Overall, the GUI simplifies quadrilateral pyramid visualization, computation, and geometric analysis effectively.
